Flavour Portfolio Expert I
Proactively build the local flavour collection by selecting the best flavours by leveraging technical information, sensory panelling techniques and commercial insights, in alignment with country/sub-region commercial strategy. Key role in the internal promotion of collections, and in the selection process for commercial briefs. Typically called “Flavour Portfolio Expert” in the SAMEA region. Execute daily brief related tasks including flavour selection, product evaluation, and application development across the Savoury and Snack segments.
Core Responsibilities:
• Building the collections
Proactively build the portfolio, ensuring alignment with market needs through sensory and market mapping panelling techniques. Lead evaluations of flavours in food applications for existing portfolio. Ensure that the collection is complete and price competitive. Identify non-performing flavours. Population of system with relevant technical information and reason to believe. Contribute to meeting targeted revenue and growth objectives established for Flavour Creation and Application (FC&A) and the Portfolio Team. Actively maintain the flavour performance data for the flavour portfolio through evaluation in finished product and capture of profiles and relevant information.
• Promotion
Structure and communicate collection updates on a regular base to the technical and commercial teams including tasting. Serve as the local technical expert and advisor to marketing, sales, flavour creation and customers on our existing portfolio. Support external promotions.
• Selection
Selection of flavours for briefs. Participate in the project assessment process. Acts as a promoter to get the broader team to select from the collection. Supports the flavour selection for projects by leveraging the broader portfolio.
• Flavour Application
Execute daily brief-related tasks including flavour selection, product evaluation, and application development. Serve as technical expert and advisor to marketing, sales, flavour creation, and customers for specific applications. Lead evaluations of flavours in food applications for briefs, research projects and portfolio evaluations. Select optimal flavours for projects according to specified requirements (i.e. customer, regulatory, legislation, cost) and suggest improvements for the most common applications. Actively maintain the flavour performance data for the flavour portfolio through evaluation in finished product and capture of profiles. Identify appropriate flavour delivery systems and technologies for customer projects in specific applications. Coach, train, and motivate technicians/students. Maintain a safe, clean and organized lab environment in accordance with EH&S policies and hold others accountable for following these guidelines.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
• Polytechnic or B.S. in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology and 4 - 6 years experience in a food applications lab or related area preferred.
• Masters Degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, and 2 - 3 years experience in a food applications lab or related area preferred.
• Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology and 0-1 years experience in a food applications lab or related area preferred.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
• Demonstrate solid sensory & tasting skills.
• Possess an intermediate understanding of flavour interaction with food matrices.
• Understanding of selected food applications, ingredients, and processes with practical experience in customers food manufacturing environment.
• Ability to translate market trends into locally relevant collections.
• Basic understanding of Sensory, Consumer Understanding and Brands.
• Thorough understanding of financial aspects of flavour selection (cost-in-use, margins, etc.)
• Demonstrate strong communication skills - confident in engaging both technical and commercial teams, and holding effective technical customers calls.
• Basic understanding of many of the flavour reactions/interactions in common food products.
• Project management skills and the ability to successfully lead selected customer projects.
• Ability to effectively participate on customer projects including customer visits and customer trials.
• Basic technical problem-solving skills in a specific applications area.
• Ability to translate market trends into innovative products for selected customers.
