Internship Fragrance Research - Biotechnology

Within 6 months of your internship in the Process Research group of the Fragrance Division, you will have a unique opportunity to explore new biotechnological routes towards fragrant molecules using your skills and creativity in biocatalysis and fermentation. The main focus will be to study all aspects and parameters required to develop efficient enzymatic processes for producing fragrance ingredients. 


You will collaborate with different S&T laboratories in Kemptthal (Zurich) and with Givaudan’s perfume creation to study the applicability of your products. You will report directly to an experienced Biotechnologist. This internship will start on March 1st 2022 for the duration of 6 months. 


You Will:

  • Study a broad range of biocatalytic reactions aimed at producing fragrance ingredients with regard to substrate specificity, product selectivity and reaction parameters and their optimization towards production
  • Learn to understand the needs of the industry, cost structure of materials and structure-activity correlation
  • Characterize the isolated and purified product(s) based on all spectroscopic data on your own or in collaboration with the responsible biotechnologist
  • Plan and improve the experimental realization of designed syntheses of new fragrance ingredients on gram to multigram scale
  • Compile and document complete experimental data in a precise and succinct way
  • Communicate your results and offer conclusions/ways forward to your line management allowing the successful progress of projects

You Have:

  • A master or bachelor degree with practical experiences in the area of biocatalysis and/or fermentation and basic knowledge in synthetic organic chemistry and molecular biology
  • Interest to work toward biotechnological innovation at the bench
  • Good command of English is mandatory; fluency in German or French nice to have
  • Open, constructive, creative, enthusiastic for chemistry, team-player
