A Senior Consumer Market Insights Manager with the global leader in the creation of Taste & Wellbeing and Fragrance  & Beauty, and a key member of our Fragrance Consumer Products Development team for Sub Saharan Africa, while being based in our Johannesburg office - Your future position?

The consumer grooming and cleaning regimen intersects with Consumer Products (Personal care, Home & Air care, Fabric care, Oral care), Fine Fragrance (Perfumes), and Active Beauty products, with fragrance at the core of every experience. Our Fragrance development team houses Evaluator’s who are olfactive development specialists, Marketeers, Consumer & Market Insights specialists, and Library (Gallery) & Best Practices teams who collaborate closely with our Perfumers and Customers to create winning fragrances. To do so, the development team analyses current olfactive trends, forecast future trends and assess consumer preferences. Our Consumer Market Insights (CMI) team is a key business partner supporting the fragrance development and sales team’s, providing in-depth consumer understanding knowledge and interpretation of test results to inspire and guide the fragrance development and selection.


We are currently looking to recruit a ‘Senior Consumer Market Insights (CMI) Manager’ for our Fragrance Consumer Products business to focus on the vibrant markets in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), encompassing countries like South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Malawi, and others. The role is based in our Johannesburg office in South Africa, will directly manage 2 local CMI resources, report to the Fragrance Consumer Products Regional CMI Head for SAMEA (South Asia, Middle East, and Africa), and offers excellent opportunities for both personal and professional development.


As a Senior CMI Manager, you will be hands-on and manage the consumer market insights activity for SSA for our key customers, take the lead on regional projects, provide insightful CMI expertise across our fragrance consumer products categories (Personal, Fabric, and Home & Air Care), and support our South Africa fragrance creation centre catering for our SSA region. You will deliver insightful consumer results to several internal stakeholders, such as fragrance development, marketing and the sales teams. The role also involves collaborating with several market research agencies across SSA, and hence strong planning and project management skills are essential.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for:


Leadership and Project Management of regional and cross-regional market research projects - 

• Identification of methodology for consumer market research studies and projects.
• Commissioning and set up. 
• Cost Management
• Management and quality control of the field.
• Management of data analysis.


Consumer Market Insights (CMI) business partnering - 

• Partner with the fragrance Evaluation, Perfumers, Sales, Marketing and Technical teams and work closely on active & proactive regional and cross-regional market research projects throughout the fragrance development cycle
• Provide in-depth interpretation of results to guide fragrance development and selection, and help to build the rationale to support our brief submissions to customers.


Be our customers’ research expert -

• Act as a market research expert in direct contact with our customers, when appropriate, to discuss and review CMI strategies, methodologies and results.
• Discuss and review CMI needs, help draw olfactive hypotheses, discuss test methodologies to generate the most actionable information and present results through olfactive recommendations to internal and external customers.
• Ensure CMI data is stored centrally and accessible for future reference


Collaborate for category development - 

• Collaborate with our Personal Care, Fabric and Home & Air Care category teams, to provide CMI leadership and expertise to improve ways of working and support strategic proactive category plans. 
• Identify opportunities and gaps in knowledge and translate insights from consumer behaviours to potential fragrance solutions to anticipate future market needs.


People management and development - 

• Manage, mentor, and coach 2 junior CMI team members.
• Create an environment for high performance through sound leadership.

Your professional profile includes:


• A Bachelor or University Degree in Marketing, business management or a relevant discipline.
• 10+ years of relevant and progressive work experience in market research, ideally with a good mix of industry and market research agency environments. 
• Experience in consumer insights for the fragrance industry or with market research companies focussing on the FMCG/CPG space will be ideal. 
• A successful leadership track record with proven people management experience of at least 2 years in successfully leading, developing, and building small to mid-sized performing teams.

• Has hands-on experience with consumer testing techniques (both quantitative and qualitative), methodologies, design, statistical approaches and modelling, is preferred. 
• Understanding of inferential & multivariate statistics and experimental design will be advantageous. 
• Strong project management skills. 
• Excellent presentations skills
• Comfortable in working and collaborating with diverse teams and cultures. 
• Excellent oral and written proficiency in the English language. Knowledge of additional languages will be advantageous. 
• Able to travel within South Africa and other SSA countries as required.
